Design and Manufacturing Battery Management System

The Battery Management System (BMS) is closely integrated with the power battery of electric vehicles, constantly monitoring the battery's voltage, current, and temperature, while also performing leakage detection, thermal management, battery balancing, alarm notifications, calculating remaining capacity, discharge power, and reporting SOC (State of Charge) & SOH (State of Health) status. It also uses algorithms to control the maximum output power based on the battery's voltage, current, and temperature to achieve the maximum driving range and to control the charger for optimal current charging. The BMS communicates in real-time with the vehicle's main controller, motor controller, energy management system, and onboard display system through the CAN bus interface.

The basic functions of the BMS are as follows:

· Monitoring the working conditions of individual cells, such as cell voltage, operating current, and ambient temperature.
· Protecting the battery to prevent it from operating under extreme conditions that could shorten its lifespan, cause damage, or even lead to accidents such as explosions or fires that could endanger personal safety.
-HW overvoltage (OV) and undervoltage (UV) protection
-HW overcurrent (OC) and short circuit (SC) protection
-HW over-temperature (OT) and under-temperature (UT) protection
-Providing multiple protections to enhance the reliability of the protection and management system
-Hardware-executed protection with high reliability
-Software-executed protection with high flexibility
-Protection against the failure of key components in the management system to provide a third level of protection for users

Design requirements for the Battery Management System:
Electric vehicles must meet the safety concept of "people-oriented" and the high reliability requirements of automotive electronics. Since electric vehicles travel at high speeds (>80km/hr), safe driving and various protective actions must be jointly determined by the driver, the vehicle management system, the charger, and the battery integration system. The BMS must not only provide sufficient power to the motor to meet the requirements of various driving conditions but also collect various information about the battery itself, make accurate calculations and judgments about its working status, and then accurately transmit this information to the vehicle management system and the driver. This ensures that the vehicle management system and the driver can make correct driving decisions, fully utilizing the battery's potential and extending its lifespan while ensuring safety.

Automotive-grade battery integration systems must meet the requirements of automotive electronics, supporting online detection and fault diagnosis, and be certified by IATF16949. Therefore, the battery integration system for electric vehicles places higher demands on battery management:

Centralized and hierarchical modular power and power systems to extend the life of the battery integration system
· Battery temperature detection and thermal management
· Estimation and display of battery health status and remaining capacity
· In electric vehicle applications, informing the driver of the remaining driving range and timely notifying the driver for battery charging, maintenance, and replacement. Since the battery's charge and discharge process is a chemical process, the algorithm for estimating the battery's health and state of charge must have deep theoretical foundations and practical experience in battery usage, possessing a high level of technical content
