INTEGRATED BRIDGE SYSTEM

With the development of the global maritime industry, the number of ships is increasing, and vessels are becoming larger and faster. This trend highlights the growing importance of navigation safety, which in turn drives the development of ship navigation and automation technologies. To improve the efficiency, reliability, and safety of ship navigation, early standalone navigation equipment has gradually integrated into a new type of automatic navigation system known as the Integrated Bridge System (IBS).

The Integrated Bridge System primarily combines existing equipment, provides comprehensive information display, and facilitates simple voyage management, thereby easing the workload of navigators and enhancing their observational capabilities. Future IBS systems will emphasize cognitive integration rather than mere equipment integration. They will include more sensors, and data fusion technology will significantly aid in the comprehensive processing of measurement data from numerous sensors. Expert systems will provide robust support for automatic navigation and collision avoidance. The continuous development and maturity of artificial neural networks (ANN), genetic algorithms (GA), and fuzzy control theory will offer additional theoretical tools and control algorithms for IBS. These systems will place greater emphasis on deep-level information processing, leveraging the rapid computation and reasoning capabilities of computers to perform situation analysis, risk assessment, decision support, intelligent navigation, and automatic piloting. Ultimately, future IBS will evolve into a comprehensive ship management system that integrates navigation (positioning, collision avoidance), control, monitoring, communication, and cargo management, focusing more on information integration and gradually advancing towards intelligent and fully automated ship operations, including automatic docking and undocking.
